What is Aquaculture?

Aquaculture is the practice of farming seafood. It’s much like agriculture, but with fish, shellfish and seaweed. Seafood can be farmed in fresh water or seawater, in the ocean or on land. Did you know aquaculture already provides over half of all the seafood we eat in the United States? It’s the world’s fastest-growing food-producing sector, offering a significantly lower carbon footprint than other types of farmed protein such as beef, pork or chicken.

Although people have been farming seafood for over 3,000 years, modern day aquaculture is developing in fascinating ways and has the potential to play a crucial role in feeding our growing planet. However, it must be done responsibly for the good of our health, our families and the environment. Eating ASC-certified seafood is a great place to start, with benefits that include:

What Makes Sushi Maki Sustainable?

Sushi Maki is committed to guaranteeing there will be fish in the ocean for generations to come! How? Sushi Maki was the first sushi chain in the U.S. to earn Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Certification – ASC’s sister organization certifying sustainably wild-caught seafood. In sourcing farmed seafood for their restaurants, Sushi Maki turned to ASC to ensure its farmed seafood was raised just as responsibly.

Sushi Maki only imports ASC-certified salmon that is responsibly harvested from the Faroe Islands and Norway, where pristine waters are clean, cold and home to one of the most comprehensive and stringent aquaculture veterinary regulatory regimes in the world. Their longstanding relationship with this widely respected and recognized salmon importer allows for regular inspections and quality reports, ensuring a higher level of transparency throughout the food the chain. All these big words mean one thing: Sushi Maki can – and does – stand behind the quality of the salmon they serve. Together, Sushi Maki and ASC believe it’s important to know where your food comes from.

When shopping for ASC-certified seafood or dining out, look for the sea green label at all Sushi Maki locations, Whole Foods, Costco, Target, Albertson’s, Amazon Fresh and more!
